The Nentir Vale:
The world is caught between the fall of one empire, and the rising of the next. Most of the world is monster-haunted wilderness. The centres of civilization are few and far between, and the world is no longer carved up between nation-states that jealously enforce their borders. A few difficult and dangerous roads tenuously link neighbouring communities together, but if you stray from them you quickly find yourself immersed in goblin-infested forests, haunted barrowfields, desolate hills and marshes, and monster-hunted badlands. Anything could be waiting down that old overgrown dwarf-built road: a den of ogre marauders, a forgotten tower where a lamia awaits careless travellers, a troll’s cave, a lonely human village under the sway of a demonic cult, or a black wood where shadows and ghosts thirst for the blood of the living.
The Nentir Vale was founded by the Nerath Empire, whose waning power over the past century has left their citizens in outlying areas stranded to struggle along as best they can.
Our fledgling adventurers started their careers in the small town of Winterhaven, on the western edge of The Nentir Vale. The ruler of Winterhaven, Lord Vallen, was looking for someone to investigate the disturbing rumours coming from a small village nearby. So far the party has investigated the rumours, and found the culprits. They are currently engaged in destroying the cult of the Elemental Eye, but it seems they have already spread to another village.
Check out the Wiki for the best known areas of our Nentir Vale (which will differ from the official version as we add or ignore stuff).

We are playing 1st Edition Dungeons and Dragons and using Unearthed Arcana as well as the Players Handbook. An overview of the classes and races you may play is on page 8 and 9 of Unearthed Arcana and is modified based on the character’s primary ability score. Note that characters playing as a single class have a +2 on their level limit as per Unearthed Arcana page 8.
This adventure has changed to a Forgotten Realms one after the party was sucked into a portal created by the mummy witch Sachmet. They stopped Sachmet’s evil plans, but have been dumped near Scornubel in the Forgotten Realms.
Their adventures are continued here: The Sword Coast Avengers!
